E-Structors Recognized as a Maryland Green Business Leader

(6/8/2011) - The celebration of green business leadership was the theme at last night’s Department of Energy Maryland Green Registry Leadership Awards, held at the Enviro-Center in Jessup, MD. The event, which drew in an audience of over 60 individuals, recognized five Maryland businesses for their commitment towards the advancement of environmental practices inside their organizations.

This year’s Leadership Award recipients included CSX, National Aquarium, University of Maryland, St. Mary’s County Public Schools, and E-Structors, Inc.

“The environmental practices that we have put in place have taken years of work to develop,” said Julie Keough, CEO and Co-Founder of the Elkridge based electronics recycling facility E-Structors, Inc. “We are pleased that we get the opportunity to share our efforts with the community.”

E-Structors was named as one of this year’s Leadership Award winners based off of several key business practices. Their facility is one of the largest electronics recyclers in the Mid-Atlantic, recycling over 22 million lbs. of electronics in 2010. They founded an environmental team inside the organization to promote the continued growth and development of their environmental practices, while assess past results. For almost a year their organization revaluated and minimized their own facilities waste stream in order to reach the zero landfill mark in February 2011. They downsized their waste output from an 8yd dumpster a day to two trash compactors a month, which is now sent for energy recovery.

Awards and recognition are not an unfamiliar event for this small business. They were the Howard County recipient for the “Better with Less” Award from comptroller Peter Franchot in April and received the Chesapeake Human Resource Association’s “James W. Rouse Diversity Award” in May.

To Julie Keough these awards do not mark the end achievement of her company’s goals. “When it comes to social responsibility, there is always room for additional improvement.”
